This pair of mittens is laden with sculptural cables on the hand and adorned with a simple, textured “sled” stitch on the palm. The two given sizes are achieved by working the same pattern at different gauges. The shaping for the thumb and lower hand is slightly unusual: unlike a traditional thumb gore, Flint’s thumb stitches are already present at the base of wrist. Stitches are increased on both hand-top & palm to shift the thumb outward in a diagonal direction for a comfortable, anatomical fit. The base of the cuff features a ribbed turned- hem as well as an optional 2-color Latvian braid accent.

  • Approximately 170 (210) yards of worsted weight wool yarn
  • 6 (8) yards of an alternate color for 2-color cuff braid

Brooklyn Tweed Shelter (100% American Targhee-Columbia wool; 140 yards/50g):

  • 11.5 (10) stitches & 17 (15) rounds = 2″ in Stockinette Stitch with Gauge Needle; 13 (11) stitches & 16 (14) rounds = 2″ over Palm Stitch with Gauge Needle (all gauge measurements taken after blocking)
  • 30-stitch cable motif on top of hand measures 3.5 (4)” relaxed after blocking (this measurement does not include 3-stitch side cables)
  • One set of double-pointed needles (or one large circular if using Magic Loop Method) in size needed to obtain gauges listed above
  • One set of DPNs (or large circular) four sizes smaller than Gauge Needle

  • Smaller Needle: US 3/3.25 mm (US 4/3.5 mm)
